commuter/touring miles since Oct 13, 2004 32,570 - REALLY ?! Over 30,000 miles in 9+ years? I never dreamed I'd get that far, starting out I thought if I got 1,000 miles a year that would be awesome.

WELCOME

I'm Geoff, and this site is for you if bike riding is an important part of your life, or you want it to be. I am a bike commuter, about 22 miles round trip most days. Bike commuting for nearly 10 years now, and I've been riding about 18 seriously. My goal is to help more people get on bikes by showing examples of what I and others are doing, and to connect you to helpful resources.

What I'm not... a racer, a fitness fanatic, a tri-athlete. I cycle for transportation, health, and to interact with other humans and the outdoors. I'm a plow horse, not a thoroughbred. I have a cycle computer and keep track of miles and time...which I track in a daily journal. Along with weight and consumption of food and beverages, the journal tells a lot about myself at the end of the month and year.

I save about $7,000 a year by not owning a car. I rent a few times a year, and "enjoy the thrill" of a new car for a couple days or weekends. It took a couple years to realize how much more sense a bike makes. Now in my 10th year without a car, I don't miss having one at all.

It helps to strategically buy a home within a mile or two of everything you need, on a bus line (rail too here in Phoenix). For us, with our last 2 homes, that's a priority when we choose where to live, it's our lifestyle, I HAVE to be able to get to work without a car!

YOU CAN DO IT, YES YOU CAN! WHO's stopping you? ONLY YOU.

WHY I BIKE

To see things and people

For my health

To encourage others

To save money

To interact with other people, and the outdoors

To not destroy the environment

It's fun

It's easy

Oh, it's transportation

MYTHS

It's dangerous

You have to wear spandex

It takes a lot longer

You'll smell like a goat

WHY YOU DON'T ?

People would make fun of you

You can't carry your gear

You might get wet

You might have a flat tire

You are basically just lazy

You feel powerful in your car
